What we do

Commons Network

A telecommunications infrastructure in the form of a common good

We facilitateaccess to the Internet throughthe constructionof a shared, open, free, and neutral telecommunications network. Whether through contributions, investments to extend the network, or user connections.

The principles of the Guifi·net Network:

Open

Anyone can access and connect without discrimination

Free

Those who connect can engage in economic, social, cultural activities, contribute content, or simply exchange it .

Neutral

We ensure the non-interference of any public or private entity in the content that circulates and in the technology used.

The Guifi·net Commons Network, both fiber optic and radio link, is an infrastructure in the form of a common good, and for this reason, we manage and share it among all those users, service operators, entities, or administrations that want to promote its growth. Always on equal terms and for the benefit of all those who wish to be users.

Through the Commons Network:

We defend the human right to access the Internet as a basic tool for action and social inclusion.

We eliminate the digital divide between urban and rural areas and facilitate the right to access information and communication society.

We promote social, local, and collaborative economy. We advocate for the development of local operators that offer internet services.

Economic model

Compensation System

Our economic model is based on a system of compensations that aims to manage the human and material resources of the network to meet the needs of participants in a fair and equitable manner, based on a collaborative model that allows contributions according to the use each participant makes of it.

At the same time, it promotes investment in shared telecommunications infrastructures and enables a fair return, both economically and socially. The system is structured around Compensation Tables, in which different involved actors participate.

In the Compensations, objective criteria for the maintenance and improvement of the network are applied, making the management of the telecommunications infrastructure as a common resource bank effective and efficient.

There are three levels of compensation:

  1. IX Compensation

  2. CAPEX Compensation

  3. OPEX Compensation

What do we offer?

Internet

The guifi·net telecommunications networkis structured through the activation of Points of Presence (PoP,Points of Presence)in the territory, interconnected as neutral interconnection points to the Internet (IX,Internet eXchange).

The PoPIX guifi· net are open to the participation and interconnection of all telecommunications operators that offer telecommunications services in the area where they are located.

They are open to all operators on equal terms, and all operators can join and interconnect to the PoPIX guifi·net

It is possible to activate new PoPIX in different areas and interconnect them with existing ones through fiber optic trunk links. It is also possible to integrate existing points to become part of the model, generating improvements due to the economies of scale that benefit all participants and the territory.

The network of Neutral Points of Access to Internet distributed throughout the territory promotes and improves access to telecommunications and next-generation Internet with high bandwidth, acting as a catalyst for local economic activation.
