What is?
What is the Fiber Optic Network of El Valle de Erro | Roncesvalles?
The Fiber Optic Network of Valle de Erro Roncesvalles (REFOVER) is an initiative driven by the councils of Valle de Erro and Roncesvalles with the collaboration of the guifi.net Foundation to deploy a shared fiber optic network in the valley area. The aim is for this network to eventually reach any home, business, or farm regardless of its location. This way, we enhance the local economy and offer a variety of service options from local, regional, or state operators.
What is a shared network?
Unlike conventional models where the ownership of the network is in the hands of a single operator who exploits it, a shared network is a hybrid infrastructure, of radio link and fiber optic, that is used as a common good and is therefore owned by all those actors who have invested to make it possible or who use it. Additionally, it has management mechanisms typical of common goods such as communal meadows or forests to ensure communal management and that no one appropriates it.
This model has advantages such as:
- Having an open, free, and neutral network.
- Sharing the same network with multiple operators.
- Environmental sustainability as infrastructures are not duplicated.
- Cost reduction
- Users have the option to choose between different commercial options.
