Last Thursday, December 13, the Capgirats program of Ràdio Caldes interviewed two members of the Guifi.net Foundation (Clara Cusó and Roger Garcia).
During the interview, they explained what the Internet model we want is and how we understand it from the Guifi.net ecosystem: "We understand the Internet as a public network interconnection," Roger pointed out. In fact, the Internet is and must be a human right and an easily accessible resource for everyone without any kind of discrimination. Easy because, as we well know, there are operators that do not facilitate access.
Hence the origin of the Guifi.net project in 2004, "when a group of volunteers from the region of Osona, mainly from rural areas, had difficulties accessing the internet and started developing a Community Network through radio links connecting different houses to nodes and thus being able to share the internet that one of the people had through an ADSL," Clara explained.
Currently, over the years, the telecommunications systems have evolved and changed, and currently the most important infrastructure through which the internet reaches us is optical fiber. In fact, currently the purpose of Guifi.net is to share the infrastructure, mainly optical fiber, because we consider that "access barriers must be eliminated because it must be accessible to everyone who wants it," Clara said.
